Roleplaying Guide Empty
PostSubject: Roleplaying Guide   Roleplaying Guide EmptyWed May 27, 2009 9:20 pm

Arrow Basic Roleplaying Rules:

1. When using "Out Of Character" speech (also known as OOC), use some sort of divider or style to keep it separated from everything else, such as ((example 1)), --example 2--, ~example 3~, example 4 (if you don't use this style elswhere in your posts), etc.

2. Use special characters, colors, styles, etc. to separate actions, thoughts, speech. This only applies to movements which do not happen when a character is speaking. example:

Quote :
*Overlord approached the frightened soldier, after slowly drawing his sword.*

"Next time you disobey a command, it won't be the enemies sword you'll need to dodge." spoke Overlord grimly as he sheathed his sword again.

*I hope he learned his lesson thought a dissapointed Overlord to himself as he walked away from the soldier.*

3. Background storylines, NPC movements, etc. can be done within the action area (in my case, it would be within the asterisks).

If you type a lot of information at once, make sure to keep them separated into different "blocks" to keep it easy to read (you can also have different separation styles for each type of thing, but thats up to each person since thats how they will develop their roleplaying style.)

Quote :
Example:

*The king looked down upon the peasant, telling him to speak for his actions. Little did the king know that the peasant was cursed. As the peasant opened his mouth to tell the king what happened, a swarm of locusts burst out of his lungs, engulfing the kingdom into the mist of insects.

Meanwhile, the party could hear the buzzing of wings from the many kingdom, nearly a hundred miles away. Honda looked toward the direction of the kingdon in dread as he saw a dark cloud approaching quickly, the buzzing getting louder with each second.*

4. Be consistent and unique. Whatever styles you choose at the start of a roleplay, keep using it for the roleplay. It gets confusing if people keep changing their styles throughout the game, and takes away from the gameplay. Plus, if everyone keeps their own style, its much easier to tell players and characters from each other with a glance.

5. Try to be at least somewhat descriptive, especially when dealing with complicated movement (otherwise others may use the lack of clarity as a basis for their posts, and if that happens, then there is no turning back).

6. If your character isn't doing much, don't be too descriptive unless it adds something to your characters attitude (such as don't mention your guy being hungry unless he is a drama queen when it comes to eating.....sort of like Ash is in the Pokemon series).

7. If you are roleplaying something with another player, such as a conversation or battle scene, its ok to have short responses as long as you keep the same roleplaying style as you nomrally would use.

Arrow Roleplaying Ettiquette:

1. Godmodding The first and most sacred rule. No Godmodding. You cannot alter or use any other person's character without permission. You cannot just do something to another character without some sort of reaction time for that player. Nor can you do something unreasonable with your character, unless there is something in your character's history about it. No character may be superpowerful unless there is a negative side to it equal to the power, or unless it is at a common level within the roleplay, such as this one since we all can have destructive abilities.

Anything your character does has to make sense, and if it doesn't then an explanation must be given. (Example of this:

An old man who has had no special powers or oddities within his description about abilities can't have a gun randomly pop out of his arm. However, if this happens, a way to fix this would be to say that if he had no memories or very few, he might have forgotten something about his history. The new ability could then be added to the description.
)

2. Demi-GodModding This means warping the storyline, character abilities, etc. just along the edge of godmodding. A good example of this would be the fix I did to the old man description. Essentially, Demi-godmodding means using the loopholes, and is frowned upon being used excessively, but is ok occasionally. When its ok to use is a judgement call, but usually its to change a story arc or prevent a death of a real player's character.

3. NPC Usage Anyone can make and use Non-Player Characters unless specified by the player who made it. Usually, the only times its not good to take control of a NPC is either if it relates to another player's personal background (if they are the ones who made it), or if you don't understand the character's personality.

4. Player Interactions We all need to play as though we are separate from the player, so if you get into a fight with a friend OOC, you should still play as though it has nothing to do with the story, simply because it doesn't. Also, its never good to gain a grudge from something that happened in a game, there's no reason for anything to carry over. Its a separate world afterall.

When playing directly with another character, give them reaction time to respond. There are times when not to have reaction time, but usually its a judgement call.

If someone who has had plenty of reaction time to respond (a week or more) and it is holding up the game, it can be interrupted by another character or event. This is an example of a good Demi-Godmodding situation. This allows the story to continue and can give the person who has missed time to catch up to whats happening.

If you know you won't be around, let everyone know in an OOC block, then make it so your character stays out of the way or becomes a temporary NPC (most people dislike this option though).

If your character has been separated from everyone because you had to leave for a while and come back to find they are much further down the story, create what I call a "filler" story. Its just a mini-story about what your character did during your real life absence. Just remember, if there is something that effects the world, it'll affect your character too during this time. You can also create things to make the story more interesting. (again, another decent time for Demi-Godmodding)
